Efficacy and Effectiveness
Here, we clearly delineate the term "efficacy" from "effectiveness." Efficacy is defined as "the power to bring about a desired result" and medical authorities have previously established an association for this term. To them, the "result" indicates either "a decrease in the circulation of a particular bacteria or virus" or "the production of antibodies."

Instead, we have gathered documentation indicating that vaccines are not "effective." In relation to the subject of vaccination, WAVE uses the term "effective," in a broader sense, meaning both "not preventing disease" and also "not producing an overall healthful effect on humanity."

For instance, if a disease is so harmless that vaccination is deemed unnecessary, it cannot be valued -- especially when considering the vaccine risks -- as "effective." If a disease is found to be, in fact, beneficial to the development and maturation of human immune systems(1), any prevention of the disease through the use of vaccination cannot be thought of as "effective." Also, although pharmaceutical and medical industries have been quick to claim false triumph, improvements in sanitation, clean water supplies, personal hygeine and nutrition were largely responsible for declines in disease incidence and mortality. The criteria in which drug companies determine a vaccine is 70% "effective" (or some such percentage) can also be completely inappropriate (both in terms of "effectiveness" and "efficacy").

1. "JHU experts argue for rotavirus vaccination"
"However as the researchers' analysis shows, many problems exist in the implementation of this vaccination in Asia. The first problem is the cost of the vaccine. Routine vaccinations are prohibitively expensive. There is some controversy over this issue because some health officials do not believe that rotavirus is a leading cause of diarrhea-related death. In more developed countries, rotavirus mortality is rare and many doctors do not consider vaccination necessary... Even if a vaccination program were implemented in Asia, poor nutrition and differences in geography can decrease the effectiveness of the vaccination. These problems are considerably more difficult to overcome."

2. "Parents deliberately expose children to chickenpox to promote immunity"
"Tucked away in the far recesses of the Internet, a strange black market for chicken pox has been forming in Tennessee and nationally by parents who fear that required vaccines will harm their children. They purposely expose their children to viruses such as chicken pox, the mumps and measles, hoping they will develop natural immunity, which they argue is more effective than the vaccines. But with fewer children contracting those viruses because of widespread vaccine use, they are having to go to extreme lengths to catch them. Chicken pox parties are advertised through word of mouth, invitation-only Facebook groups and message boards. In October last year, a woman in Nashville was caught by a television station selling chicken pox-soaked lollipops for $50 a pop. "I have PayPal and plenty of spit and suckers," read the message on the Facebook group "Find a Pox Party In Your Area." "It works, too, because that's how we got it! Our round was Fed Ex'd from Arizona. We've spread cooties to Cookeville, Knoxville and Louisiana!" State public health officials said they also have heard reports of mothers sending spit-filled rags to one another to rub on their children. "My impression is that [chicken pox parties] are scattered across the U.S. and not terribly uncommon," said Tim Jones, the state epidemiologist with the Tennessee Department of Health. "It is a really misguided idea." A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Health said the state has no way of tracking or knowing the number of "pox parties" or parents who expose their children to chicken pox or any other childhood disease."

3. "Dangerous New Flu Vaccine for Seniors"
"One of the primary differences between the ‘regular’ Fluzone vaccine and Fluzone High-Dose for seniors is that the latter contains four times as much microbial antigen—the lab altered flu viruses – that prompt your body to produce antibodies to the three different influenza strains contained in the flu vaccine. The idea is that seniors need more antigen in order to provoke the desired immune response, because studies have found that the flu vaccine creates only a weak immune response in the elderly. In essence, they’ve realized that the flu vaccine does not work in the elderly, and the belief is that upping the dose will do the trick."

4. "New Study Exposes the "60% Effective" Flu Shot as 98.5% Useless"
"A new study in The Lancet Infectious Diseases reveals that the flu vaccine prevents lab confirmed type A or type B influenza in only 1.5 out of every 100 vaccinated adults … but the media is reporting this to mean "60 percent effective." It is estimated that, annually, only about 2.7% of adults get type A or type B influenza in the first place. The study showed that the use of flu vaccines appear to drop this down to about 1.2%. This is a roughly 60% drop, but that ignores the fact that the vaccine has no protective health benefit for 97.5% of adults. "

5. "Swine Flu Vaccine Dangers Exposed"
"Interestingly, a Canadian study found that those who received a seasonal flu shot in 2008 were as much as 274% more likely to get H1N1 than those who elected not to get the shot. Referencing this study, health columnist Mike Adams says the seasonal flu vaccine is only effective in 1.5% of the adults who are injected with it. (2) That is a pretty sad number. What’s even more sad is the fact that the swine flu vaccine that was hyped as being imperative to saving lives was just as ineffective. (3) Not only are these vaccines ineffective, but they can lead to some very serious side effects that make them more dangerous than getting the actual flu."

6. "Vaccines for kids shirked in eight states "
"Reasons for skipping school shots vary. Some parents doubt that the vaccines are essential. Others fear vaccines are risky. Some find it easier to check a box opting out than getting the shots and taking care of the required paperwork. Still others are ambivalent, believing in older vaccines but questioning newer shots against, say, chickenpox. Some parents worry about the number of shots. By the time most kids are 6, they'll have been jabbed with a needle about two dozen times - with many of those shots given in infancy. The cumulative effect of those shots hasn't been studied thoroughly, some parents say."

7. "43% of Americans Risked Their Brain Health for This - Did You? (comment)"
"The CDC states that the annual flu vaccine is the "best" way to avoid catching the seasonal flu, but what many fail to realize is that there's virtually NO valid scientific evidence to support it, in either its effectiveness or its safety. This is particularly true for key target groups for which the CDC says the flu shot is most important, like seniors, children and pregnant women! Again and again, the Cochrane Database Review—which is the gold standard for assessing the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of commonly used medical interventions—has concluded that flu vaccines do not appear to have any measurable benefit either for children, adults, or seniors. "

8. "Flu vaccine statistics don’t add up"
"The treatment group comprised adults who were vaccinated with a trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine. According to the study, 1.18 per cent got the flu. The difference between these two groups (2.73 – 1.18) is 1.5 people out of 100. In other words, the flu vaccine did nothing for 98.5 per cent of adults in the studies. So where did the media get 60 per cent effective? It’s called lying with statistics. First you take the 2.73 per cent in the control group who got flu and you divide that figure into the 1.18 per cent of the treatment group who got the flu. This gives you 0.43. You then say that 0.43 is 43 per cent of 2.73 and claim that the vaccine results in a 57 per cent decrease in flu infections. This becomes the 60 per cent effectiveness claim."

9. "Parents Avoid Chicken Pox Vaccine with Infected Lollipops"
"A CNN affiliate, KPHO, discovered the story when they came across a Facebook page called “Find a Pox Party in Your Area.” The page, which has now been removed, had 1,000 Facebook Likes postings by parents willing to sell and ship infected chicken pox lollipops across the state. One post read: “Fresh batch of Pox in Nashville Tennessee. Shipping of suckers, spit, and Q-tips available tomorrow. $50 via PayPal.” According to an archived version of the page, its’ purpose was “for parents who want their children to obtain natural immunity for the chicken pox.”"

10. "Current trivalent flu vaccine lacks efficacy; improved flu vaccine needed"
"Significant evidence of efficacy is lacking for the current licensed influenza vaccines in the United States, and better vaccines are needed to provide adequate protection, according to results of a new study"
Osterholm MT, Lancet Infect Dis. 2011 -- 10/31/2011
