Efficacy and Effectiveness
Here, we clearly delineate the term "efficacy" from "effectiveness." Efficacy is defined as "the power to bring about a desired result" and medical authorities have previously established an association for this term. To them, the "result" indicates either "a decrease in the circulation of a particular bacteria or virus" or "the production of antibodies."

Instead, we have gathered documentation indicating that vaccines are not "effective." In relation to the subject of vaccination, WAVE uses the term "effective," in a broader sense, meaning both "not preventing disease" and also "not producing an overall healthful effect on humanity."

For instance, if a disease is so harmless that vaccination is deemed unnecessary, it cannot be valued -- especially when considering the vaccine risks -- as "effective." If a disease is found to be, in fact, beneficial to the development and maturation of human immune systems(1), any prevention of the disease through the use of vaccination cannot be thought of as "effective." Also, although pharmaceutical and medical industries have been quick to claim false triumph, improvements in sanitation, clean water supplies, personal hygeine and nutrition were largely responsible for declines in disease incidence and mortality. The criteria in which drug companies determine a vaccine is 70% "effective" (or some such percentage) can also be completely inappropriate (both in terms of "effectiveness" and "efficacy").

1. "JHU experts argue for rotavirus vaccination"
"However as the researchers' analysis shows, many problems exist in the implementation of this vaccination in Asia. The first problem is the cost of the vaccine. Routine vaccinations are prohibitively expensive. There is some controversy over this issue because some health officials do not believe that rotavirus is a leading cause of diarrhea-related death. In more developed countries, rotavirus mortality is rare and many doctors do not consider vaccination necessary... Even if a vaccination program were implemented in Asia, poor nutrition and differences in geography can decrease the effectiveness of the vaccination. These problems are considerably more difficult to overcome."

2. "Research from Animal Testing is Misleading"
"In our books [1-5], we have said many times that research with animals is misleading. For example, drugs that would not have harmed humans did harm mice and were consequently not put on the market. The National Cancer Institute has stated that society may have lost cures for cancer because of animal testing. [6] Researchers working with monkey models of HIV tested a vaccine on the monkeys and subsequently gave the vaccine to humans who were harmed as a result. These examples infuriate people in the animal-based research community. The following will too. An article by Greber et al. [7] at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Münster reveals that work with stem cells from mice “are often pointless -- and sometimes even misleading.”[8] This is not say mice and humans have nothing in common. Even their stem cells have things in comon. But it is the differences that are important when trying to extrapolate research results to a different species. “In other aspects, though, as scientists have known for some time now, human and mouse ES cells differ enormously. Certain signalling substances that can be used to turn mouse cells into liver, nerve or muscle cells, for instance, produce either no effect or totally different effects in human ES cells.”[8] And there are more differences. 3. "Vitamin D as effective as vaccine in preventing flu"
"Taking high doses of vitamin D3 supplements in winter helps reduce risk of acquiring seasonal flu in winter, a new Japanese trial demonstrated. The trial results, reported in the March 10, 2010 issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, show that children given vitamin D(3) supplement were 42 percent less likely to get infected with seasonal flu than those who were given a placebo. The efficacy is remarkable as it may be comparable to that of flu vaccine, which is generally low because the virus used to construct the vaccine is likely different from the circulating one."

4. "Learning from H1N1"
"First of all, is the World Health Organization guilty of overreacting to pandemic threats? Ever since the Hong Kong Flu in 1968, experts have warned about the next pandemic. The WHO has a proven track record of reacting forcibly to such developments, including Swine Flu of the 1970s and Avian Flu in 1997 and in 2004. When H1N1 first broke out in Mexico in the spring of 2009, the WHO immediately issued a worldwide warning. But, it was soon realized that the virus was not as severe as the previous pandemics and its mortality rate was even lower than that of regular seasonal flus. Still, when the geographical pattern of cases reached the definition of pandemic, the WHO wasted no time in declaring the dawn of the H1N1 pandemic, despite the relatively mild nature of the disease. 5. "Vaccine Failure -- Over 1000 Got Mumps in NY in Last Six Months"
"More than 1,000 people in New Jersey and New York have been sickened with mumps since August. Almost all of those infected with the virus are of the Orthodox or Hasidic Jewish population. The mumps outbreak began at a summer camp for Orthodox Jewish boys in Sullivan County, New York. Health officials have linked the outbreak to an 11-year-old boy at the camp. He had recently returned from the United Kingdom, where a mumps outbreak had spread to 4,000 people. The boy had been fully vaccinated against the mumps, as had 77 percent of the patients in New Jersey. The vaccine is not 100 percent effective, according to the CDC."

6. "Do Flu Vaccines Really Work? A Skeptic's View"
"Jefferson and colleagues have published several systematic reviews of existing studies on the efficacy of influenza vaccines. Weighing the data, they conclude that there is insufficient evidence to indicate that flu vaccines reduce infection rates or mortality, even in the elderly. Jefferson, a former British army doctor now based in Rome, spoke with TIME about his quest to spur further research into flu vaccines. "

7. "New research: no good scientific evidence flu shots are effective or safe for elders"
"According to none other than the esteemed health experts of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) web site, "... people 65 and older should get their regular, or 'seasonal', flu vaccine as soon as possible...It turns out, however, there's no valid scientific evidence to back up these recommendations. In fact, a new study just published in the Cochrane Systematic Review concludes: "Evidence for the safety and efficacy of influenza vaccines in the over 65s is poor, despite the fact that vaccination has been recommended for the prevention of influenza in older people for the past 40 years." A research team conducted an extensive investigation of studies based on previous vaccine trials. ...All the other studies that were scrutinized were found to be not only of low quality but clearly open to a bias toward flu vaccines.. "As the evidence is so scarce at the moment, we should be looking at other strategies to complement vaccinations. Some of these are very simple things like personal hygiene, and adequate food and water," Jefferson continued."

8. "What May Be the Single Biggest Threat to Your Health?"
"In the early days of the panic, the BBC Today program brought in a WHO 'expert' to predict that 40 percent of Britons would catch swine flu, while citing another unnamed 'expert' as predicting that up to 1.2 million could die. Yet eight months later it was being reported by scientists that swine flue is only a tenth as virulent as ordinary flu, and only one 100th as virulent as that Spanish flu at the end of World War I.... In other words, swine flu -- just like the bird flu which a senior WHO official said in 2005 was going to kill 150 million people worldwide (the true death toll turned out to be barely 200) -- has predictably turned out to be yet another example of that all-too-familiar and very dangerous disease of our time, the 'scare phenomenon.' These scares consistently follow an identifiable pattern...."

9. "Mumps Outbreak in NY, NJ Tops 1, 500 Cases "
"Among 1,100 from the new outbreak, the CDC said 88 percent had gotten at least one vaccine dose, 75 percent had two doses. Health officials last month began offering a third dose in some schools where the outbreak has persisted. So far, cases are continuing."
Associated Press, New York Times -- 2/17/2010

10. "Nursing Mothers Should Avoid Yellow Fever Vaccine"
"The case involved a 22-year-old Brazilian woman who virus to her 3-week-old baby through her breast milk. The mother, who lived in area that was fighting an outbreak of yellow fever, received the 17DD yellow fever vaccine about two weeks after giving birth to a healthy baby, according to Aline Mallmann Couto, MD, of the Hospital de Caridade de Cachoeira do Sul in Brazil, and colleagues. Five days after receiving the vaccine, the mother developed a headache, malaise, and a low fever, which persisted for two days, the researchers reported in the Feb. 12 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report."
