Monosodium Glutamate (MSG):C5H8NNaO4, a Stabilizer

MSG is a food additive, popularly marketed as a "flavour enhancer". In its pure form, it appears as a white crystalline powder.

In a 1995 report by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) two groups of people were defined as intolerant of MSG - those who eat ...more

1. "The Vaccine Issue - My Son’s Story"
"What exactly is in a vaccine? Try some of these on for size…formaldehyde, aluminum hydroxide, aluminum phosphate, ammonium sulfate, formalin, and monosodium glutamate (MSG) to name a few. These are chemicals and heavy metals for cripes sake! If you look up some of these chemicals you will see that they are labeled hazardous and toxic. How in God’s green earth we can possibly think that these ingredients have NO effect when packaged in a vaccination shot? How can we think that cumulative exposure is not dangerous…especially combined with all the other exposures that occur in daily life? I like the comment left by one of my readers on another post: If you think these things are not dangerous…you are living in “Fantasy Land”."

2. "Local Mom Says Vaccinations A Cause of Autism"
"When Ann Dachel of Eau Claire brought her son John in for a routine vaccination, she never expected his behavior was about to change. "He didn't pick up on things around the time that he was 18 months to two-years- old, he wasn't speaking, he stopped babbling, I never would have connected that to vaccinations," Dachel said. But, after some research on her own, she soon did, discovering what she calls a clear connection between the increasing autism rate and rising exposure to vaccines with toxic substances like aluminum, MSG, formaldehyde and mercury."

3. "Abnormal glutamate metabolism in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis"
"Glutamate, a potentially neuroexcitotoxic compound, is thought to be the transmitter of the corticospinal tracts and certain spinal cord interneurons. A systemic defect in the metabolism of this amino acid may underlie primary ALS."

"In rodents, daily injection of neurotoxic monosodium L-glutamate (MSG) during the postnatal period induces retinal lesions, optic nerve degeneration with an alteration of visual pathway and an absence of the b-wave in the electroretinogram."

6. "Relief of fibromyalgia symptoms following discontinuation of dietary excitotoxins"
"All had complete, or nearly complete, resolution of their symptoms within months after eliminating monosodium glutamate (MSG) or MSG plus aspartame from their diet. CONCLUSIONS: The elimination of MSG and other excitotoxins from the diets of patients with fibromyalgia offers a benign treatment option that has the potential for dramatic results in a subset of patients."
JD Smith, et al,  The Annals of Pharmacotherapy: Vol. 35, No. 6, pp. 702-706 -- 1/1/2001

" The results indicate that exposure to MSG in early life in rats could lead to subtle behavioral aberrations in late adulthood."
