Sucrose:C12H22O11

As a pure carbohydrate, has a high food energy content (4 kilocalories per gram or 17 kilojoules per gram), and thus can make a diet hypercaloric even in small amounts, contributing to obesity.  An experiment with rats that were fed a diet one-third of which was sucrose may serve as a model for ...more

1. "Acute renal failure and intravenous immune globulin: sucrose nephropathy in disguise?"
"The precise cause of IVIG-associated acute renal failure is unknown but may be attributable to either the direct effects of the immunoglobulin or the stabilizing agent used in the IVIG preparation."
Perazella MA, et al, Am J Ther 5:399-403 -- 1/1/1998

2. "Influence of the Injection of a Sucrose Solution on the Properties of Rat-liver Lysosomes"
"IN work recorded here, rats were injected intraperitoneally with 8 ml. of a 50 per cent sucrose solution. They were killed 2 h after the injection."
R. Wattiaux, et al, Nature 203, 757 - 758 -- 8/15/1964

3. "Influenza virus vaccine, United States Patent 3989818"
"Fluzone®, Influenza Virus Vaccine (Zonal Purified, Subvirion) for intramuscular use, is a sterile suspension prepared from influenza viruses propagated in chicken embryos. The virus-containing fluids are harvested and inactivated with formaldehyde. Influenza virus is concentrated and purified in a linear sucrose density gradient solution using a continuous flow centrifuge. The virus is then chemically disrupted using Polyethylene Glycol. Influenza virus is purified, fractionated or concentrated in an aqueous medium, using a linear filamentary non-charged polymer, preferably polyethylene glycol, as an insolubilising agent "

4. "Product Insert"
"(Vaccine) IGIV products have been reported to be associated with renal dysfunction, acute renal failure, osmotic nephrosis, and death. While these reports of renal dysfunction and acute renal failure have been associated with the use of many licensed IGIV products, those that contained sucrose as a stabilizer and were administered at daily doses of 400 mg/ml or greater have accounted for a disproportionate share of the total number."
